SCS Career Counseling and Placement Services (CCPS) offers workshops focused on a variety of career preparation skills, such as: resume critiquing, career fair preparation, Chemical Sciences recruiting workshops, mock interviews, professionalism in the workplace and etiquette at work, negotiating skills and budgeting, cooperative education and internships, and networking. CCPS participates in campus career fairs, such as the annual Sciences Career Fair. CCPS offers grad students year-by-year guidelines, the Academic Opportunities Bulletin, and a host of other services.
Department of Chemistry Graduate Student Activity Committee (DCGSAC) sponsors the annual Careers in Chemistry Symposium each July, which provides a great opportunity to learn about future career possibilities as well as network with chemistry graduates in exciting and diverse fields.
Carver Biotechnology Career Services
The Carver Biotechnology Career Services is committed to educating and guiding biological sciences graduate students and postdocs on their career development options and plans, including their search for full time employment and offering resources to assist in developing a personalized, quality job search strategy.
Courses and Programs
BioE 598 and CHEM 590F — Preparing Future Faculty
Topics include: deciding whether academics is right for you, mechanics of a job search and interview skills, writing successful independent research proposals, setting up a research program and managing a group, teaching your first class, and getting tenure. Different types of academic careers are examined and the course aims to demystify the academy.
Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Management
The Institute for Genomic Biology together with the University of Illinois College of Business offer the Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Management (CEM) program for engineers and scientists with an interest in the life sciences and related disciplines. Led by Illinois faculty and community entrepreneurs, this program is designed to teach academics about business, economics, and law.
Division of Biomedical Sciences
Throughout the year, the Division of Biomedical Sciences offers a Faculty Development Program for junior faculty, postdocs, and grad students to prepare for their independent careers by participating in seminars and workshops led by senior faculty members. Topics have included: Roadmap to National Science Foundation, Roadmap to Department of Defense, Overview of Governmental and Private Funders, National Institutes of Health Roadmap, Elements of a Successful Research Enterprise, Grant Writing Workshops, and Working with Companies.
The Graduate College offers career development workshops to supplement the professional development of graduate students in all disciplines at Illinois.
The CareerSTART program provides tools to help grad students prioritize and achieve their goals and helps them develop a comprehensive, well-rounded set of skills that will enhance their career potential.
The Office of External Fellowships provides services to help Illinois graduate students compete for external grants and fellowships.

Center for Teaching Excellence
The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE). Over the past year, CTE offered 35 workshops on a variety of topics, including: Managing Your Course: Anticipating & Overcoming Classroom Problems; Using Informal Early Feedback; Designing a Grading Rubric that Actually Helps You; Making Content Memorable Using Narratives; Test Construction: Got Questions?; Writing Your Teaching Philosophy Statement; and Building Community in the Classroom: An Intercultural Approach.
