Scientific Fraud Mini-workshop (Amphitheater)
Presenter: William Trenkle (Office of Research Integrity)
Recent trends in scientific publishing and the simultaneous development of sophisticated software that can easily alter digital images have led to an increase in the identification of manipulated images in the literature. This talk will address how the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) handles the ever increasing flow of allegations submitted to ORI in institutional reports, and by journal reviewers and editors, bloggers, and anonymous readers of journal’s manuscripts with their high quality images available on-line. The difference between showing that an image is false and that a false image equals research misconduct will be reviewed. Examples of manipulated images will be presented to illustrate some of the forensic tools used by ORI’s investigators to help determine if manipulations were significant and intentional. (~50 minutes).
